SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 7TH: HUNTERDON HISTORICAL SOCIETY'S DORIC HOUSE OPEN, 1 to 3 PM: The Hunterdon County Historical Society is looking forward to welcoming you back to their Doric House Museum. The house is a beautiful example of Greek Revival architecture that serves as an exhibit space for a selection of our Hunterdon artifact collection. The collection includes antiques, portraits, quilts, Stangl and Fulper pottery, political buttons, as well as historic photos, maps and documents of Hunterdon County. The tour will take you to the attic and basement and a peak in Miss Bessie’s upstairs parlor. Tours run for about 45 minutes.  Free but reservations are required.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 21ST:  TOURS OF THE HISTORIC CASE-DVOOR HOUSE:  COME TO THE FARMERS' MARKET AND GET A DOSE OF ARCHITECTURE AND HISTORY!  DID YOU MISS THE GHOST TOUR?  THERE WAS A MURDER IN THIS HOUSE AND A "BENEVOLENT" SPIRIT HAS BEEN DOCUMENTED TO HAUNT IT!  COME AND HEAR ALL ABOUT IT AND STAND WHERE THE MURDER HAPPENED!  The historic Case-Dvoor House on Dvoor Circle, under the stewardship of the Hunterdon Land Trust, is opening its doors for free, small-group tours.

Dave Harding, Hunterdon Land Trust's Outreach Director and Hunterdon County Historical Society Administrator, will conduct this basement to attic tour of the Georgian-style Dvoor Farm house, built in 1798 by Philip and Amy Case. The program features an historical exploration of the property’s history, and the story of the three families (Case, Davis and Dvoor) who owned and farmed the land for about 250 years.

Learn about the 1803 basement murder and come see the 18th-century graffiti in the attic. Tours run for about an hour and are offered at 10, 11 and noon.  Free but reservations are required.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 14TH:  HUNTERDON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY ANNUAL FALL MEETING:  2PM, FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC:  Everyone is welcome to join us for our annual fall meeting with special guest Dr. Stephen Kaufman, who will discuss "The Peopling of the Americas: How and When Did Native Americans Come to Hunterdon County." Dr. Kaufman, holds a PhD in Archaeology and recently retired as a full professor from Raritan Valley Community College. He chaired the Department of Humanities at RVCC for several years, and taught classes in anthropology, archaeology and racial diversity. Dr. Kaufman and his wife, Phyllis, also ran a travel agency, which gave him the opportunity to travel the globe and conduct trips to many of the world’s major archaeological and historical sites. Venue for this free event  is TBD. We will post updates on our website and through these online emails.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 14TH: COVERED DISH SUPPER FOLLOWED BY A TALK ON SAVING AT RISK CEMETERIES WITH DAVID R. READING: SUPPER 5 PM (PLEASE BRING A COVERED DISH TO SHARE AS YOUR DONATION); LECTURE AT 6:15 PM: The Tewksbury Historical Society will host a lecture by David R. Reading. He will illustrate the talk with examples of the preservations completed over the last 15 years, beginning with the Reading Burial Ground near Rosemont. The plot is located on a farm once owned by Lloyd Wescott and contains his ashes and those of his family.

Preceding the talk is a covered dish supper at 5 p.m., also open to the public, with a request to bring a covered dish to share.

The event is free and open to the public. 

Reading is president and founder of the Mount Amwell Project, Inc., a historical preservation charity dedicated to cultural and historical preservation in Hunterdon County. He will lecture on the process, methods and legal aspects required to preserve abandoned at risk cemeteries in Hunterdon County. 

Reading served four years in the U.S. Army and received a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science, summa cum laude, from Maryland University. He worked in a Florida aerospace software company before starting his own consulting company in 1998. His services were provided to the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC, until retiring in 2013.

He is currently treasurer and board member of Preservation New Jersey, a member of the Council of Proprietors of West New Jersey, the Descendants of the Founders of New Jersey, the Genealogical Society of New Jersey and the Sons of the American Revolution and a patron of the Hunterdon County Historical Society. He resides in Tewksbury.

Society membership is open to anyone interested in the history of Tewksbury Township. Members receive a quarterly newsletter and advance notice of all programs and events the Society holds throughout the year. The Society holds three regular meetings per year on the 3rd Sunday in January, March, and May with a 4th being the Covered Dish Supper with program.

The Tewksbury Historical Society is a New Jersey not-for-profit corporation and was organized for the purpose of furthering research into and the preservation and dissemination of the history of the Township of Tewksbury. The Society requests donations of documents, records and small artifacts related to Tewksbury’s History. Society information is found on its website.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 5TH: DORIC HOUSE MUSEUM TOURS, 1-3 PM:  The Hunterdon County Historic Society is reopening the Doric House Museum for tours! Join them to learn all about this beautiful Greek-Revival home and the people who lived there. Make sure to visit the museum’s second floor Astle-Alpaugh Gallery, which features an exhibit of historic Main Street Flemington photos dating from 1889-1905. The images come from the archival collection of the estate of John F. Schenk and capture the shops, houses, churches and people on Main Street from the turn of the 20th century.

Having been closed last year due to the pandemic, they are anxious to greet visitors again for our big year-end event.

The Joseph Turner House, where Colonial charm meets Victorian splendor, will display both 18th and 19th style decorations, host a Colonial cooking demonstration, there will be a vintage fashion display and presentation,

Food and refreshments will be provided. FREE, but donations are gratefully accepted.

Guests who bring a non-perishable food item for the local food pantry will receive a voucher for a free tour.
