We started the year on January 1st with a big production of the founding of Hunterdon County and we're ending the year with a big event on December 31st! The Hunterdon County Tricentennial Committee will be burying our time capsule in style this Wednesday, December 31, at high noon. The time capsule will be buried in the park behind the Historic Courthouse.
Beginning at 11 am, the Raritan Valley Symphonic Band will play Victorian era brass band music in the Gazebo. The volunteers of the 300th will be grilling and serving hot dogs, hot chocolate and chips, all courtesy of Shop Rite of Flemington. Everyone is encouraged to come and party with us! If you are in the area, stop by for lunch; we would love to see lots of children – especially those 3rd and 4th graders who participated in our Time Line Project this year – at the event. The County Time Line is one of the many items that are secured in the time capsule.
The time capsule will be opened in 2114.
At noon, the National Anthem will be sung by 11 year old Hampton Public School student Ava Rose Dressendorfer. Dignitaries will reflect on the 300th year of Hunterdon. A full list of the items in the time capsule will be revealed.
The time capsule, a whopping 26 inches high by 14 inches in diameter, was manufactured by Flemington’s Mechanical Precision, Inc. and donated by Wally Cullen. A special subcommittee of volunteers worked on deciding what items should go in the time capsule and what should be stored in the County Archives to help future generations of county residents who put on future large scale celebrations.
Following the burial ceremony, food will be served until either the crowd or the food runs out!
